A fire in that originated in a South Florida junkyard spread to several businesses and prompted evacuations.
Miami-Dade Fire Chief Ray Jadallah told NBC 6 that the Memorial Day blaze was one of the “largest fires” MDFR had encountered. About 125 people in apartments east of the junkyard in Opa-Locka were evacuated out of an “abundance of caution,” Jadallah said.
The fire — first reported at about 5:07 p.m. on May 25 near the 13100 block of Cairo Lane — prompted a response by over 80 MDFR units, which found “heavy flames and smoke coming from multiple vehicles on fire at a junkyard,” according to a post by the agency. The fire has since “extended into three nearby businesses,” though there were no reported injuries at the time of posting.
“Firefighters are actively working to extinguish the fire, establish additional water supplies, and prevent fire extension while addressing hot spots in the area,” reads the post. “Windy conditions have created additional challenges for crews as they work to contain the fire and prevent further spread.”
As of 8 a.m. May 26, the fire was listed on Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s Active Fire Calls page. Its cause still remains under investigation.
MDFR asked that the public avoid the area “so first responders can work safely.” The agency advised anyone nearby to remain indoors, close their doors and windows and set air their conditioning systems to recirculate. If anyone must drive near the area, MDFR warned that intermittent road closures could be possible, and that motorists should stay alert and follow all traffic directions.
